What is a HCI Device?
A Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) device is designed to facilitate intuitive and effective interactions between users and computers, enhancing user experience, productivity, and accessibility through innovative interfaces and technologies.
Existing Devices in the Market
Fitness Trackers (worn on wrist, finger, neck, ankles)
Smartwatches (worn on wrists)
Digital Journals (Handheld)
RESEARCH
Ear-Centered Sensing: From Sensing Principles to Research and Clinical Devices
Research shows that cognitive journaling significantly improves self-awareness, mental health, and stress reduction, while users prefer continuous, discreet health monitoring.
Ear-worn devices are favored for their accuracy and comfort, making them ideal for integrating health monitoring and cognitive support.
Opportunity Statement
How might we seamlessly integrate health insights and cognitive support to enhance well-being non-intrusively?
Form Specification
Design
A C-shaped band that clasps the helix of the ear, made from lightweight, hypoallergenic materials for discreetness and comfort.
Functionality
The device integrates multiple sensors, including temperature, PPG, and GSR, housed in a compact, flexible PCB, allowing for real-time health monitoring and cognitive journaling.
Practicality
Designed to be worn comfortably for extended periods, with materials chosen for durability and resistance to daily wear, sweat, and moisture.
Prototyping
Several initial attempts failed, such as integrating LEDs into the analog prototype, which proved too bulky and invasive. I learned the importance of balancing technological integration with user comfort.
Support, Management and Data Visualization App
Eauring integrates seamlessly with its mobile app, enabling users to focus on mood, exercise, food, or sleep.
AI-generated journal entries, customized wellness affirmations, and personalized tips enhance their journey.
Users can view stats, edit entries, and receive tailored wellness guidance effortlessly.

Personal Takeaways
Discovery: Found that integrating health metrics into a user-friendly interface empowers users to take proactive steps in managing their health.
Mistakes: Initially focused too much on technical features, which made the interface overwhelming for users.
Improvements: Simplifying the interface and prioritizing the most critical health metrics helped in enhancing user engagement.
